Adjustments and disputes
Find the invoice and receipt versions behind a disputed charge, request a supported correction, and escalate with evidence instead of guessing at a credit.
Before you start
Start with the records, not the conclusion. A charge that looks wrong is usually a period boundary, a unit difference or a version you are not reading.
You need a member role that can read finance records. A work key cannot open, change or close a correction.
Locate the exact versions first
Three references identify the thing you are questioning. Collect all three before you write to anyone.
- The invoice version — invoices carry a version that only moves forward, so name the one you are holding.
- The statement period — its start, end and currency.
- The receipt reference for the job behind the line you are questioning.
Receipts are content-free, so a receipt reference is safe to send. It identifies the work without carrying your input data.
Check the evidence before you ask
Compare the accepted units on the receipt against the accepted units on the statement line. Then compare the line's unit against the workflow's declared unit.
Where the quote is the question, check the maximum price against what was charged. A charge above the quoted ceiling is a real defect; a charge below it is normal, because you are billed for accepted units.
If the numbers reconcile, the difference is usually in your own mapping. That case is covered by allocate Compute costs.
Request a correction
Send the invoice version, the period, the receipt reference and the specific line. State what you expected and what you read, in that order.
A correction that is accepted arrives as a new line, with its own amount and its own reason. It never rewrites the invoice you already hold, so both records stay readable afterwards.
You will always get a written outcome, and a refused request carries its reason and the next step you can take. A request is never closed silently.
Escalate a dispute
If the correction request does not resolve the difference, escalate it as a dispute against that specific invoice and line.
Keep the same three references. Add what changed since the first request, so nobody re-does work that was already done.
While a dispute is open, the rest of the invoice keeps its own due date, and existing results and receipts stay available to you.
What is never assumed
No credit, refund, waiver or changed charge exists until it is issued as a record you can read. Nothing on this page, and no example anywhere in these documents, creates one.
Tax treatment and legal interpretation stay with your finance owner and your advisers. They are not decided by an automated step and not inferred from a correction.
Never send a key, a payload, a signed URL or bank details with a billing question. If someone asks you for those to progress a dispute, stop and confirm with your finance owner.
